Description

Brazil nut kernels are becoming increasingly popular. Native to Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, Brazil nuts have a very unique taste and are already an indispensable part of nut mixtures.

Botanically, the Brazil nut is not a nut. The individual ‘nuts’ are found in a fruit capsule of the Brazil nut tree. They are not obtained from plantations, but almost exclusively from wild collections. This means that each Brazil nut is truly handcrafted. The nut originates in the tropical rainforest of Brazil, which is why it is also synonymously named the ‘Brazil nut’. Unlike the harvest from plantations, it stretches over half a year during the rainy season from November to May. Here, the nuts are gathered and delivered to the processors. The Brazil nut is the largest known plant source of selenium.

There are currently four countries with significant production, with Brazil and Bolivia leading the way, and Côte d’Ivoire and Peru making up a small proportion. In total, just under 100,000 tonnes of Brazil nuts were harvested in 2018. There has been no significant expansion of production areas, so volumes have remained at a stable level since 2008.
